Suicide indirectly associated with visual impairment

Visual impairment has indirect negative effects on an individual’s health, thus increasing the possibility of suicide among visually impaired individuals, according to an article published in the journal Archives of Ophthalmology. “Increased mortality risks have also been noted in adults with visual impairment and disabling eye disease,” according to the article.

Dr. Byron L. Lam of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, University of Miami School & Medicine, and colleagues conducted a meta-analysis to shed light on this.

The researchers studied data from the national health surveys from 1986 to 1996 participated by 137,479 individuals. Along with information on visual impairment details. the participants also supplied relevant information about their other health conditions.

After an 11-year follow-up, the researchers were able to record 200 deaths. “After controlling for survey design, age, sex, race, marital status, number of non-ocular health conditions and self- rated health, the direct effect of visual impairment on death from suicide was elevated (increased by 50 percent) but not significant:’ the researchers noted. “In summary, we observed that reported visual impairment increased suicide risk, particularly indirectly via reported health status and health conditions’

Given this, the researchers concluded that an improvement in treatments of visual impairment and other contributing factors to poor health condition can significantly reduce the risk of suicide.

In the swiftly turning world of DSLRs, a year and a half can only mean one thing—turnover. When those 18 months are up, Canon engineers throw up their arms and hand in whatever monster they’ve egged into evolving. In most cases, we get the same old devil in a flashy new suit, but other times, such as in the case of the 450D, we get a beast of an improvement.

On the surface, the 450D — or Rebel XSi, or Kiss X2 as it’s known in other parts of the world — doesn’t look much different from its predecessor, the 400D. A larger, 3-inch LCD screen (still at 230k pixels) gives you the feeling that the model got smaller, and makes you wish for the time when the entire back of a DSLR will be one big touch screen. Otherwise, it’s hard to spot the differences,

Its in the details that the 450D announces its newness. Live View? Spot metering? 12.2 megapixels? Yes, yes, and oh baby, yes. In answer to image stabilization (IS) being built into competing entry-level DSLRs, the 450D now has an 8-55mm kit lens with IS—a sweet compromise. Canon has already invested a lot by putting IS into its best lenses, and for good reason, too. Many photographers believe that putting IS in the lens is more effective than stuffing it in a camera body.

Upgraders, or those looking for a second body to their 400Ds, might scratch their heads when they find out about the 450D’s different- shaped, but higher-capacity Li-ton battery, and its exclusive acceptance of SD cards. These changes however, are understandably done in the name of progress, hence easy to forgive — especially when you notice that you’ve already shot 500 photos and you’re only halfway through your battery meter or when you go out to buy a 4GB SD card for a mere 1,500 bucks.

Canon has simply made the best out of its best, and the 450D is another graceful step in Canon’s winning stride.

Ease kids back into the routines and responsibilities of the school year.

Making the transition from a long vacation to the classroom setting can be challenging for your children especially if your family was busy having a good time the whole three months of summer. It won’t be easy for them to go back to student mode, but there are ways you can help them ease back into their new routines and responsibilities.

The first thing to do; Slowly include school-related topics in daily conversations. But keep it casual—start asking about what their classmates and teachers may have been up to this summer, and lead up to questions about upcoming school activities or subjects that interest them. Aim to find out how they feel about the return to school. Once you have established your children’s thoughts and feelings, try these other strategies for a smoother move back to schooldays.

• Develop a pre-school year routine early. Get your child to sleep and wake up early. Write the new school year schedule (which may be the same as last year with some revisions) where your child can see it.

• Put up a calendar and make a countdown to the first day of school. Gradually slow down on the summer activities and let downtime kick in. Give kids the time they need to re-energize for the start of school.

• But don’t stop the summer fun! Weekends can still be spent watching a movie, baking cupcakes, or maybe having a slumber party.

• Take your child along when you shop for school supplies. Involving them in choosing their bags pens and other supplies will surely get the children excited.

Be optimistic about the new school year and be sure your children know that you will be there for them throughout the year. And once school starts, reassure them that they need not be the perfect student, but that all you ask is for them to do their best.
